Team Brainiac has had a terrific start to our year together. In second grade we have a significant focus on reading; we have moved into a different reading program which has a specific weekly emphasis. We began with learning about how important characters are and what a character trait is. We then move onto looking at genre, setting, plot, and main ideas. We finish our morning work refining our language arts skills; editing sentences for mistakes, constructing complete sentences without mistakes, and spelling. Some difficult skills to master. Brainiacs have been reviewing math skills and learning some new ones. We are skip counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, and 10’s, trying to understand  odd and even numbers, using a number line, and breaking numbers down into pair bonds for adding and subtracting.  All pretty exciting stuff! Every day is a fresh adventure and is packed with new and different ideas. Please ask your child about what they learned today. Share a book with them in the evening; you will be helping your child to succeed in their academic endeavors and they might just surprise you with what they can do.
